Better vision leads to more learning and a high quality of life. Helping school age children correct their visual impairments, increases their potential to learn and education is the fastest way to break the cycle of poverty. TeleVistas has been active in South America for the last three years, developing countrywide plans to increase early vision correction as a means to increase early educational success that is needed for building a health educated middle class. In Chile, there is only one ophthalmologist for every 35, 000 inhabitants. Unfortunately, most are in the major urban centers. This leaves the rural and coastal areas unserved. In Paraguay, a country with a population of almost 6 million, is served by approximately 160 ophthalmologists, most of whom practice in the larger urban cities such as Asuncion. "A disorder of vision without being diagnosed or treated can lead a child to be the worst of its kind ... the factors related to the vision of a student are significantly the best predictors of academic success of their race or socioeconomic status." |
Our VisionTeleVistas hopes to diagnose and treat vision disorders on a large scale. This includes areas that are typically underserved by eye care professionals. Telemedicine is the tool of the future, especially in terms of quality and accurate vision care worldwide.
"The visual defect is the most common disability in children. Blindness and visual impairment in children and older adults have not been considered as an index of health or quality of life. "
